Self-Guided Tours

Lodging in fine establishments, such as wonderful Virginia bed and breakfasts, is as much a part of the experience as the bicycle ride. That is why Virginia Bicycling Adventures makes every effort to book the best available Shenandoah Valley lodging at every stop on your tour. These properties provide comfort, pampering and the opportunity to experience the ambiance of Virginia. All provide an awesome breakfast, some will prepare a lunch for you, some might even provide dinner, and many have late afternoon social gatherings. Most rooms have en-suite bathrooms or may have a private bath a few steps down a hallway; a queen double bed is the standard but occasionally a room with twin beds can be secured.

In Virginia, most bed and breakfast properties are very large houses that have been restored to reflect the ambiance and character of the period of their construction. We can upgrade in some cases, but given the rural nature of the Valley often our selections are the best available and should be enjoyed for their charm, local touch, and service. An upgrade or downgrade change will usually alter the published tour price. Since we are quite selective, we find that in certain locations none or no acceptable bed and breakfast properties exist or our usual choices are fully booked, so we focus our lodging efforts on motels and hotels having at least three stars. Under Travel Partners, links to the web sites for many of the B&B's used by Virginia Bicycling Adventures can be found.

Of importance to note is that during the fall foliage season, weekend rooms and sometimes weekday rooms carry premium rates which will result in your tour price being adjusted accordingly; moreover, it is virtually impossible to secure weekend rooms at a bed and breakfast at that time of the year without several months lead time. If your schedule permits and your interest is the fall foliage, it is better to focus on Sundays through Thursdays as room rates are generally less than on weekends but still higher than during other seasons. Availability is also better and the volume of road traffic is more than normal but less than on Saturdays and Sundays.
